In Through the Layers improvisation is explored through movement, voice and speech. The objective is to build courage to investigate new directions and layers of voice and motion, and to work one's own blind spots. How is my personality reflected in my movement, voice and speech? How are voice and speech part of my own idiom of movement? What kind of movement does my voice lead me to?
The course is open for both hobbyists and professional dancers. We want to encourage individuals from different backgrounds to share their work with voice and movement and to expand their own expressive potential. Improvisation as a skill permeates all layers of life. It is a creative method that can be used in the studio, on the stage and in everyday life. Bringing together the different movement histories and experiences of the participants is an important, enriching part of the course.
In January 2015, experienced improvisation artists Pia Lindy and Heini Nukari launched a collaborative project called LAYERS with the aim of finding new ways of developing improvisation skills for performances and pedagogic use.
Pia Lindy is a dancer and a choreographer whose works combine humour and gravity, innovative dance action and critical social thinking. She explores improvisation, process-based work, performance methods and working in different environment and contexts.
Heini Nukari is a dancer who finds sound and movement equally powerful modes of expression. She has explored their relationship through improvisation, music, field recordings and the Body is Voice method.
