Contemporary rave combines dance club and dance class. Live music often used in dance classes is replaced by a DJ, who mixes the music in real time. Activities cover both relaxed and tempestuous mental landscapes.
The course focuses on the relationship between music and movement. The structure of each class follows the arc of gradually increasing energy in a manner not unlike the arc created by the DJ in a dance club. The music reflects, contrasts and reacts to this arc. On a more microscopic level we explore how the DJ's small variations of the beat alter the movement and how small changes and turns of rhythm take the motion to new directions.
The course also uses a chakra-based method developed for solo work by Terhi Vaimala. It combines physical precision, the chakra thinking of yoga, the use one one's own voice to focus physicality and, finally, open exploration of one's own movement from a sensitized state of mind.
Course instructors are Terhi Vaimala (dance) and Sami Henrik Haapala (dj). Terhi Vaimala graduated from Theatre Academy in 2003, and has danced in choreographies by artists including Kenneth Kvarnström, Jyrki Karttunen, Ervi Sirén and Petri Kekoni.
Sami Henrik Haapala is an actor (FIA), dancer, DJ and a doctoral student who has arranged clubs and events in various club and art contexts for more than 15 years. He is also known under his DJ name Samba Klaus.
