After a long wait, world-renowned choreographer Raimund Hoghe performs in Helsinki. Hoghe, who is also known as Pina Bausch’s dramaturge, brings to Side Step Festival his latest duet. The work in question, Pas de Deux, continues a long line of duets centered on a young, beautiful male body and Hoghe’s own experienced character.

In ballet, a “pas de deux” is a climactic duet where the two principal dancers demonstrate the mastery of their art. What divides, what unifies? This is the question Raimund Hoghe and Japanese dancer Takashi Ueno trace in their pas de deux, literally, ‘step for two’, with a great intimacy that is only heightened by distance. The result is an exquisite interplay of hands and arms, gestures, gazes, and complementary movements that narrate different biographies, cultures and experiences. They create a dialogue in movement that allows them to slip into new roles again and again to probe for always new possibilities within a relationship and for one‘s own perspective on the self.

“His aesthetics rely on attentiveness and rigidity, on subtle gestures, on exciting exaltations and great calm.“  - Katja Schneider, goethe.de
