The newest production by Hodworks, Conditions of Being a Mortal, is an exhilaratingly physical piece exploring what it means to be a human being. After the minimalist corporality of Dawn – another piece by Hodworks in the Side Step festival programme – Conditions of Being a Mortal seems full of unexpected and diverse elements. The dancers experiment with direct expression of emotions, voice, intricate costume and ballet pointe shoes.
The virtuosic dancers challenge themselves with exhaustively physical movement, creating a state of trance where sentiment flows from the unconscious. In between the continuous movement and expression we are able to catch glimpses of humanity, familiar and strange.
