RITUAL is a raw, humoristic and thought-provoking journey inspired by Inuit culture, arctic nature and urban breakdance battles.
In this duet, Danish choreographer Lene Boel juxtaposes the magic and spiritual values of traditional Inuit culture to the raw energy and power of urban hip hop and breakdance culture.
The Inuits used drum-dance for centuries to administer justice, resolving conflicts between parties through song and dance. On the other hand breakdance battles, in which negative and violent intentions are translated into personal, explosive artistic expression, are a characteristic feature of urban dance.
In RITUAL, dance, light and music combine in a performance that explores the basic forces of humanity and nature.
“Everything in nature and everyone has a soul, and this belief encourages respect all living creatures. In today’s society it is important for us humans to feel that we are not always the ones on control” - Lene Boel
RITUAL’s visit to Helsinki takes place as a collaboration between Zodiak and Art Cooperative Monkey Garden. The performance is part of a tour of the NB Dance Loop touring network tour 2016–2017.
