The fragile outline of life traced by death. What does thinking about it do to the human being?
For God, created by choreographer Soili Huhtakallio and her workgroup, explores the construction of meaning and the experience of meaningfulness. It considers critically the need to locate the meaning of existence somewhere outside the body, in gods and ideals, while, on the other hand, exploring the role of art as something that imitates the extrasensory.
What if, instead of one's own body and the bodies of others, the things sacrificed to gods were the ego and antrophocentrism? How to make the notion of the approaching end bearable? As one possible answer to this question, For God proposes body-awareness; the contemplation of the limits of the body and its inherent fragility.
For God's score sets the choreography in parallel with the history of Western sacred music, translating the musical structures of harmonies of composers including Johann Sebastian Bach to the stage.
Soili Huhtakallio graduated as a choreographer from the Theatre Academy of the Helsinki University of the Arts in 2016. Huhtakallio considers the process of creating art and its outcomes as a shared space, where we can come together to reflect and contemplate.
Her journey grappling the often complicated relationships between faith, dance and the female body started at a young age. After many radical phases, including a time of total abstinance from dance, she now wants address these themes through her art.
