In Quartetto, four individuals who perceive and interact with the world slightly differently meet on stage to dance together and alone, to surrender to motion that arises from their own uniqueness, from their own longing and love.
Quartetto’s composition was born as a result of a coming together. Three dancers and a sound designer share the same space, come to contact with each other and communicate through motion. What emerges is the individual as a performer: human beings simply enjoying becoming seen and taking command of their own personal space.
The performance is a gentle yet radical comment on the right of people classified as intellectually disabled to be regarded as dancers, performers and participants in the society – as people with senses, desires and yearnings.
Quartetto is the first collaboration between choreographer Kati Raatikainen and the performers. It was born out of a process that has drawn on the lives and the experiences of the participants, and is guided by the choreographer’s personal philosophy of performance.
Quartetto premiered at the Kokkola Winter Dance festival in February 2019.
The visit is made possible by the Regional Dance Centre of Ostrobothnia. The performances are a part of the X-Dance Festival 2021.
