Zodiak Laboratory is Zodiak's residency concept. In March-April 2025 the ZodLab residency artists are Bianca Hisse and Laura Cemin.
During the residency, we will explore tradition and heritage in folk dances and its evolution through migratory movements, along with the intersection of folkloristic and contemporary dance practices. Our goal is to examine how cross-border movements have shaped the transmission of these dances, observing how certain movement patterns are either preserved or transformed in the process.
Holding Tones centers on a core movement concept: "holding." This concept appears across multiple of these dances, transcending geographical boundaries. Through our exploration, we aim to uncover the connections across traditions and geographies, revealing both differences and commonalities in distant regions.
How is cultural heritage transmitted and transformed through dance?
How does dance practice integrate into society?
Bianca Hisse (Brasil/Norway) and Laura Cemin (Italy/Finland) both operate at the intersection of visual art, performance and choreography. Their work, often presented in galleries and non-traditional performance spaces, focuses on language and on how contemporary discourses influence mobility and social circulation. They have been exploring such topics in their individual practices while developing their collaborative body of work. Their first stage performance as a duo, How the Land Lies, premiered in Kiasma in 2023.
