Are you interested in art and performance? Dance artist Kati Raatikainen invites art and culture lovers over the age of 15 living in Northeast Helsinki to make and produce their own light-structured art events and performances in the area during 2021. Applications deadline December 13.

Would you like to explore and deepen your perception of art in a group? Would you like to make a performance of your own, or bring art to your neighbourhood or community?

Valokeilassa koillinen -project continues for the third year in the area of Tapanila, Puistola, Suutarila, Siltamäki, Töyrynummi and Tapulikaupunki. Dance artist Kati Raatikainen invites art and culture lovers over the age of 15 living in Northeast Helsinki to make and produce their own light-structured art events and performances in the area during 2021.

The project comprises workshops, lectures, and performance and museum visits. Participants also devise artistic actions to be experienced by the public. An artistic action can take almost any form. It can be, for instance, a performance, garden party, concert, exhibition, environmental artwork, tour of a city district, blog or podcast.

The central element in the project is its local dimension, and what each participant wishes to support in their own nearby living surroundings or own community.

Group members can realise their actions and events in collaboration with Raatikainen or other Valokeilassa koillinen artists from Helsinki City Theatre, Teatteri Tuike and Northern Helsinki band school. The members can take the role of performer, or invite along a local amateur group, or other individual or group.

The workshops have two focus areas. One of them guides the participants towards performance making through simple exercises led by Kati Raatikainen and other Valokeilassa koillinen artists. The group will also practice event production together with Zodiak's artistic director Harri Kuorelahti and the dance artist and producer Anna Koskela.

In addition, local libraries will host open lectures on four Wednesdays (replacing that weeks meeting) to present community-driven art-making with featured speakers of Valokeilassa koillinen artists. We will also make about four visits to museums and performances during the spring at other times.

The project practices art-making in the spirit of circular and social economy. We always aim to be environmentally friendly in our work, meaning that we minimise purchasing new materials and instead aim to borrow from others. We emphasise the power of networks and practice the sharing and utilising of already available resources.

Due to COVID19 restrictions we will meet on two different small groups 20.1.–12.5.2021:

  • Group 1: At the Youth Center of Tapulikaupunki on Wednesdays at 11.15–13.15
  • Group 2: At Playground Tapuli premises on Wednesdays at 17.30–19.30.

A more detailed schedule for the autumn of 2021 will be agreed closer to the time. The schedule will be based on what kind of artwork the group decides to do as a part of the festival programme.

You can apply to take part and encourage your neighbour to do so as well if you are over 15 and reside in the districts of Tapanila, Puistola, Suutarila, Siltamäki, Töyrynummi or Tapulikaupunki.

You can apply for the open call by 13 December 2020 with a free-form application on Google Forms:
