Jouni Järvenpää: Skarabee

The home is a desert. Empty cans rattle on the kitchen floor and a pond has escaped from the full sink. There's someone swimming in the pond. The wind's slow static is buzzing and the streets are far, down below.  A mountain rises in the background, crawling with tiny mountaineers, and the sun rolls across the window as if forced to do so. It all looks like a nature document, a program made by insects, for the insects. The sun rolls across the window as if forced to do so. The sun rolls across the window as if forced to do so. Under the ground lies a hidden treasure, perhaps, or idk.

If beetles were to make a nature documentary of humans, what would it look like? Jouni Järvenpää’s entertainingly absurd solo piece Skarabee crawls out again, pushing on the October sun.

The performance is built on 1740 unopened cans and Timo O. Nenonen’s ambiguos installation. It is a clear close-up of the on-stage tension, the sensitivity of presence, and the situations suggested by randomness.
